Keddie and Whitla unfold 40 rich figures of speech that portray Jesus in both the Old and New Testaments. Using Scripture’s own “portraits-in-words,” they illuminate the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ in thoughtful detail and issue a pastoral call for response. As you see and understand Christ through his own word pictures, you will find a summons to love and worship him more.

5 of 5 Great for Devotional Use - Jesus on Every Page December 14, 2020
Reviewer: Walter Shaw from Glenside, PA United States
The Bible is full of pictures of Jesus. From the Word by which all things were created, to the bridegroom in the heavenly New Jerusalem, there seems to be a portrait of Christ on every page of Scripture. Gordon J. Keddie and David G. Whitla have collected and exposited 40 of those images in the book Portraits of Christ.

If I could describe this book in one word, it would be thorough. Aside from having 40 robust entries, every entry is packed with Scripture references and explanations of passages of Scripture. There is some serious yet accessible theology being done here. For that reason, I would recommend taking some time to read through this book. Portraits of Christ is not the kind of book to be read in just a few sittings. I would recommend reading a chapter of this book each week, taking time to deeply consider the different pictures of Christ in Scripture.

This book was graciously provided to me by @crownandcovenant.

5 of 5 WIll help you be amazed by Jesus October 8, 2020
Reviewer: Nick Minerva from Fresno, CA United States
In Romans 11 Paul asks "Who can know God?" It's a rhetorical question because Christ is beyond our comprehension. But Jesus still desires us to know him. So throughout Scripture we are given pictures to help us understand Christ's character, nature, and work.

In Portraits of Christ Keddie and Whitla unpack the 40 different metaphors the Bible uses to describe our Savior to us. Each chapter unpacks scripture after scripture helping us be amazed by Jesus and fall more in love with him. Jesus said if he was lifted up, men would be drawn to him. This book does a fantastic job of lifting him up and God will use it to draw your heart to him.

One of the things I love about this book is each chapter is relatively short so it can be used in personal devotions or family worship. This hardcover book is built to last, making it a great heirloom. It would also serve as a great resource for any preacher or teacher who is looking for a good reference tool.
