Description

"This book actually changed my life. The last chapter healed deep things in my heart...I still cry when I think of it." —Lacey Sturm, chart-topping hard rock solo artist, author of The Reason [from the Foreword]

"I was very heartened to see someone write a book as brave and honest as this one. Scholarly, engaging, and remarkably accessible, this book takes history seriously and refuses to simplify complex issues. Drawing from early Church fathers through Descartes, Kant, and Nietzsche to purveyors of pop culture and advocates of atheism, Rut addresses contemporary cultural issues from a perspective many would prefer not to consider—but that cannot be ignored." —Janie Harden Fritz, professor of communication and rhetorical studies, Duquesne University

"Whereas many critiques of culture complain and scold, Etheridge decides instead to explain and counsel—and does so supremely well. He speaks to people both inside and outside the church, as well as those feeling caught in between. His message about Christianity and contemporary culture is clear. Each chapter feels like it was written with both passion and compassion.” —Russell Haitch, professor of Theology and Human Science, Bethany Theological Seminary

Self-made truth is the air we breathe in our day, which past philosophers hailed as the Age of the Lonely Self. You feel it when the silence falls around you and the whispers start within you: that growing, gnawing isolation, that deepening detachment from the world, from others, from yourself. God Breathed will help you understand and courageously doubt the popular dogma that God cannot speak, that the Bible is not only inaccurate but impossible. It will help you break out of the soul-suffocating confines of self-made truth. Within the pages of God’s book is the true you, just waiting for you to arrive. God Breathed will help you get there.

5 of 5 This book will make you think, and get a song stuc March 31, 2020
Reviewer: Nick Minerva from Fresno, CA United States
This book does a great job at unpacking the lie of self-made truth. Throughout, Rut Etheridge diagnoses much of what is wrong, in our society and graciously points the reader back to the Scriptures and back to Jesus; the only true hope for humanity. He doesn’t shy away from the hard parts of the Bible, but leans into them to show us how we can connect with God through even the parts of the Bible some would rather ignore. Rut does a fantastic job of connecting with his readers without being cheesy and uses great cultural references to help make his point (I promise you’ll get at least one song stuck inside your head.) If you got honest questions about the Bible, this book will lovingly walk you through them. It strikes a great blend of theology, philosophy, and apologetics but remains easy to read for the person with no background in any of those things. As society increasingly moves away from God and into the world of “self-made truth,” books like this one will become more important.

5 of 5 Really spoke to me as a dad. December 4, 2019
Reviewer: Vincent S. from Boise, ID United States
This is a truly amazing book with lots of heart felt truths.  As a father to a six kids, two which are in college right now, it really is an eye opener.  I find it really hard to put down, it so hits home.  I see myself so much in this book, and also have gotten an insight on what our kids are going through in this day and age.  Thank you Rut for helping me open my eyes, and I just hope someday I can get my kids to read this wonderful book as well.  Until then, I keep praying they will.  Thanks again.  Highly recommended.

5 of 5 Inspring, challenging, deeply personal work October 3, 2019
Reviewer: Anonymous Person
Although this book is targeted towards young adults, it's deeply relevant and appropriate for folks of all ages. A younger audience will be challenged, and those (young and old) with more experience with philosophy and theology will appreciate the depth and want to dig deeper in the references and recommended readings. This is a very personal, very thoughtful book which challenges the reader to use both their mind and heart when it comes to their faith and beliefs.

5 of 5 God Breathed September 9, 2019
Reviewer: Elizabeth Flynt from Rome, NY United States
This book couldn’t have come into my life at a more perfect time. When I started reading God Breathed, I was at a spiritual decline; doubting God’s existence and the credibility of the Bible. Reading this book sparked a desire to pick up my Bible and pursue a relationship with God. It is truly a life changer in my experience.

Rut Etheridge first addresses where philosophers, such as Kant and Nietzsche, went wrong trying to explain God’s role in the world and what their ideas have done to our culture today. In a most sincere, loving way, Rut points us back to truth, encouraging us to fight against modern day ideologies and trust in the One who created all. Intelligently written, mixed with humor, and compassion that will pull at your heartstrings.

I was given a prerelease copy of God Breathed to give my honest opinion.

5 of 5 God Breathed reads like the best sort of college c September 4, 2019
Reviewer: Jessica
God Breathed reads like the best sort of college class: full of non-cheesy references, thoughtful discussions, and powerful applications.

Beginning with Scripture and tracing historical and philosophical ideas and movements, Rut Etheridge also uses song lyrics, film illustrations, literature references, personal narratives, and more, to lead us on a tour of human-thought history. Countering many voices who claim that truth is either merely personal or totally irrelevant, Etheridge makes the case that truth is a real thing that we can know and that doesn't originate or depend on us.

And he does it with so much love.

I fully recommend God Breathed to both believers and unbelievers, as well as to those unsure about church, hurt by church, or even opposed to church–and anyone who loves these kinds of people.
